Colin John Williams Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Mr Colin John Williams on 23rd December 2020, aged 88.

Colin was a much loved and respected teacher at Dame Alice Owen’s School. He joined the staff at the Boys School in Islington in 1957 to teach Classics, remaining there until the amalgamation with the Girls School and relocation to Potters Bar in 1973.

He was acting Headmaster at Potters Bar, overseeing the building of the new School, often holding staff meetings on the bonnet of his car!. He retired in 1991.

During his 34 years of service at the School, as well as teaching his main subjects of Latin and Greek, he also taught History, Religious Education, English and School History with first year pupils.

His detailed chalk blackboard drawings drew much attention and as Fire Officer, his famous cardboard flames would appear anywhere in the School during fire drills representing a blocked exit, forcing pupils to find another way out. He enjoyed many trips to Harrock House, often accompanied by his ever supportive wife Ann.

He was also very involved in the writing of the updated version of ‘The History of the School’.

In 1993 he was honoured with the Freeman of the City of London by the Worshipful Company Of Brewers to recognise his long service to the School.

His daughters Mary, Jane and Helen all attended the School in Potters Bar.

A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and teacher throughout his life, Colin will be very sorely missed.

The Old Owen’s Association offers sincere condolences to Colin’s family for their sad loss.

The family will be holding a Memorial Service for Colin on Wednesday 7th July at 2.00 pm (Homewood Road URC, St Albans, AL1 2B). All are welcome to attend.

Dr Alan Davison ‘Deceased’

Alan_DavisonIt is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Alan Davison ex headmaster of Dame Alice Owens School (2005-2016) and Old Owens Association ex Chairman & Committee member. Alan passed away suddenly on Thursday 8th October 2020 after suffering a stroke.

The Association would like to express their sadness and thanks for all the work that Alan performed on the Committee and offer sincere condolences to his family for their loss.

Condolences can be sent via the School to email address:
